From one beehive to Raw Cornish Honey

Raw Cornish Honey started with a fairly simple question: could I make my own beeswax?

During the first lockdown, I was working as a retail manager and looking for something different to get stuck into. I started restoring old furniture, taking things that had been forgotten or thrown away and giving them a new lease of life.

One day, while finishing a piece of furniture, I was using some beeswax and wondered why I couldn't make it myself.

That got me thinking. If I was going to make my own beeswax, why not keep bees? I mentioned the idea to my partner, Carly, and she was just as interested as I was. I then signed up for a local BBKA beginner's beekeeping course and, luckily, a good friend offered me a quiet corner of his garden where I could keep my first hive.

That first hive was the start of something much bigger than either of us expected.

Today, we look after more than 30 colonies of honey bees across Buckinghamshire and Cornwall.

From Buckinghamshire to Bodmin Moor

We have recently moved to Bodmin, Cornwall, and our beekeeping has followed us.

Over the years, our bees have foraged across the countryside of South Buckinghamshire and now across Cornwall, including the wild landscapes around Bodmin Moor.

Moving to Cornwall gave us the opportunity to build something around the honey produced here, which is where Raw Cornish Honey came from.

The idea is simple. We want to produce good quality honey that reflects the place it comes from, while keeping the process as natural and straightforward as possible.

One of the things we love about keeping bees is that no two seasons are exactly the same.

The flowers available to the bees, the weather and the time of year all have an effect on the honey they produce. This can change its colour, aroma and flavour from one harvest to the next.

That's part of what makes local honey so special.

Our honey is produced in small batches and handled with care. We don't try to make every jar look or taste exactly the same. We want the natural character of the honey to come through.

More than honey

Keeping bees has also introduced us to some of the other things that can be made from the hive.

We work with pure beeswax and make a small range of natural products alongside our honey.

For us, it is all part of the same thing. We try to make the most of what the bees provide while treating the bees and the environment around them with respect.

Why Raw Cornish Honey?

Raw Cornish Honey isn't a big commercial honey business.

It's something that has grown naturally from a hobby that started with one hive and became a way of life.

From that first hive in Buckinghamshire to our bees here in Cornwall, we have learned a huge amount along the way and are still learning every season.

We are proud to produce honey from Cornwall and to share a little part of the landscape around Bodmin Moor with our customers.
